I had a privilege and honor to meet John several times at Nanoparticle Conferences (NPC’s) in Zürich and at SAE World Congresses in Detroit, during my activities with Drs. Legerer and Mayer (picture NPC 2018).
He always supported the efforts to protect the health and environment with His experience and advises.
Beside His technical knowledge and merits I highly regarded his open, friendly and motivating personality. Every meeting with John was an enlightening pleasure.
I will keep Him for ever in my memory and my prayers. May the Lord bless Him and give Him an eternal peace.
I send my cordial condolences to John’s Family

I worked with John as a colleague on clean air initiatives. John was unique and had accomplishments that impacted society like few others.
In the holiday movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, Jimmie Stewart’s character is granted the ability to see what life in his small town would be like if he never existed. In that regard, I think if John “never existed”, millions of people would have prematurely died. I don’t make these comments lightly. I have probed this question with John’s contemporaries, and all agree that John’s unique qualities allowed him to conceptualize and help develop what many call “the greatest environmental invention ever”, the three-way catalyst. John was appropriately granted this acknowledgement when President George W. Bush gave him the National Medal of Technology Award, which many regard as next best to a Nobel Prize. Further, although he was well-past retirement age, John used his stature and devotion to keep promoting tighter emission regulations and clean air.
As I read the other attributes to John, I’m not at all surprised how he personally impacted many in a multitude of ways. John lived a long, charmed life. I am grateful to have known him, and will openly share my experiences with him with others and celebrate his life.

Please accept condolences from the staff and members of the Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association on the sad news of our dear friend and colleague's departure. John was a former president of our organization and will always have the highest respect as an engineer, champion and leader of our industry. His life was dedicated to cleaning up air pollution for his family. He is one of a very few individuals that can claim to have made contributions to the automotive industry that led to saving the lives of millions and extending the lives of countless more with cleaner air around the world. He was a caring person that was always willing to share his knowledge and life experience with the young engineers following in his footsteps. He was a pleasure to work with, travel with and socialize with.
In 2000, on the 25th anniversary of the catalytic converter, John was awarded MECA's Clean Air Award. For over 30 years, this award was reserved for leaders in government, industry and the environmental sector that fought for the cause of clean air. This year, on the 50th anniversary of the Clean Air Act, MECA will rename this award in his memory, the John J. Mooney Clean Air Award. He will always be in our memories and he will be missed.
With sympathy,
Rasto Brezny
Executive Director of MECA

I wanted to send along my condolences to Claire and the rest of the Mooney clan on John’s return to our good Lord. I worked at Engelhard with John at the end of his career in Iselin. We both had the same boss there, Frank Briden. John was always out somewhere in the world in those days, preaching on the merits of catalytic converters for cleaning the air. Frank never knew where John was, and used to complain to me that he didn’t want to be John’s boss. I also interacted with John in MECA, where I served as the Executive Director from late 2005 until early 2016. John was the best clean air crusader of his time. Billions of people across the globe are breathing easier today because of John’s efforts - a legacy that you all can take enormous pride in. I have many lasting memories of listening to John’s stories from the early days of the catalytic converter, and his globetrekking exploits with Claire.

In 2003 we first met, both retired but we started up again, teamed up and enforced each other to clean Diesel exhaust gases from carcinogens like solid nanoparticles and so we succeeded to introduce Diesel particle filters around the world. This was the second big step after John had introduced TWC to clean pertrol enginesl. No single man in our generation has done more for the health of people around the globe. He has safed millions of life years of poor and rich, black and white, old and young, men and women. His wife called us "single minded" once we were sitting at the river Rhine close to Schaffhausen talking emissions and I had the impression that he was proud on this judgement as I was too to be called the same. We did research together and engineered solutions, published our work at engineering conferences and presented it to govenments in the USA and in Europe. He was not only an excellent engineer, inspriring people around him, a fascinating speaker by presenting facts, nothing but facts, an embassador for clean technology but also a wonderful friend. Nobody who walked at his side will ever forget this feeling of conditionless friendship. The painting below taken by the austrian painter Leo Stopfer from a snapshot at ETH-conference in Zürich 2013 with Fritz Legerer and myself showes this wonderful relaxed atmosphere of his presense. I am remaining happy and proud to have been selected to walk a few miles at his side the same direction,

Message from Jacques Lemaire, a French Engineer who shared years of professional activity with John within MECA and later on within VERT, a Swiss association trying to defina the Best Available Technology for controling diesel emissions. I have had a deep admiration for the Engineer and even more for the Man and I want to express my deep sympathy to the family of John. During my life I did not meet more than 2 dozen of really good people and John is definitively member of this short list.

My deepest condolences for the loss of John. What an amazing man! I feel so privileged to have spent time learning about his incredible technological work, but also about his beautiful family. It was truly an honor to recognize him with the Research & Development Council of New Jersey's 2014 Science & Technology Medal. To this day, still one of my favorite films! Thinking of you all during this difficult time-Kim Case (Executive Director, Research & Development Council of New Jersey)

God Bless Uncle John. He was always so encouraging and led our large Mooney clan into the world of skiing at Mad River and memories that we all cherish. He had a huge impact on my son Liam who couldn't believe we had such a legacy in the family, so much so that he did an award winning National History Day documentary on him at the age of 12, "John J Mooney, Catalyst for Change." Co-inventor of the catalytic converter, he also got the world to remove led from gasoline, and was part of the movement that got the Clean Air Act passed and tons of other stuff. In the world of chemical engineering he is a rock star. He joked that as a result of being part of the team that tested the hydrogen bomb in the pacific (17 times), he used to pee neon green in those days. Although he was awarded the national Medal Of Technology in 2002, his greatest achievement is his contagious positive energy and the conviction that we can all make the world a better place. And he did!

We are some of the neighbors that always enjoyed seeing John on his daily walks. Our kids would get so excited to see him and his ever present smile, and never ceased to be amazed by how many grandchildren he had! Colgate Ave. won’t be the same without him. We are thinking of everyone in the large family he loved during this difficult time.

Mr. Mooney's impact on both the community and our family is immeasurable. We can all thank him for us being able to breathe cleaner air due to his engineering the catalytic convertor. Seeing handsome Mr. Mooney biking and walking through Wyckoff always brought us joy. Conor knew Mr. Mooney through his grandchildren and was so happy to be part of his family life.
With much love and respect for your father and grandfather, Thomas, Mary Lyons and Conor Kim

I just read about John’s passing in the newspaper. I had the honor to work with John for many years at Engelhard. His passion for the work he did in trying to make the world’s air cleaner was evident in everything he did and everyone he met. John was also passionate about his family. He would speak of them regularly during our travels around the world. I am sure they will miss this vibrant exciting man as the world will miss a great contributor to the clean air we breath.
My condolences to the family. I want them to know there are many people like me that remember John as a great person with a great heart and great mind

The very sad news of John passing away has reached me in Sweden.
During the 70:s I had the pleasure to work with John then representing what subsequently became our catalyst supplier on developing the three-way catalyst. John played a vital roll in this project and became a dear friend whom I later met several times both in Sweden and the US. One of my best memories will always be skiing with John and two of his daughters in the US as well as skiing in Norway.
May John rest in peace.

I am so sad to hear this, and offer my sincere condolences to the Mooney/Convery families. I always enjoyed and looked forward to my chats with Mr. Mooney through the years, as he bicycled or walked past our house. He was such an unassuming gentleman, one would never have an inkling as to his many contributions and awards in the field of science. Rest peacefully Mr. Mooney, it was an honor to know you. Sláinte.
