Aunt Ann was one of the four Mulcahy stars (pictured, Ann far right) who filled my childhood sky. Ann’s keen , open mind , always honest and bright, brought out the best in me. I’ll always remember that when I married outside the church, which was a big deal 50 years ago, Ann & Dan sent us our only wedding present. We still use that gift and think of them often. Also I’ll never forget when my father died, Ann and her family included my bereaved mother in their myriad, family activities, which was an inestimable boon for my mom. These are just a couple of examples of the lifetime of grace and love and fun that was Aunt Ann.

Ann, Peter, Brian, and Danny,
Your Mom was such an amazing and positive influence in shaping my life. For me she was one of five adults (my parents, your dad & mom, and my grandpa Doyle) who showered me with over 20 years of unconditional love and approval for just “being”. For some reason, I always felt like she was glad to see me. To me she was always so solicitous, gracious, poised, and genuine. I liked how she spoke, how she laughed, how she treated me as an individual. I can still smell and remember the steaming lasagna baking in Fresh Meadows as we celebrated holidays, birthdays, confirmations, and graduations as two families bonded by our Mulcahy roots. I believe she and your dad were my official “godparents” though the details of that fact have blurred over these last 60 years. It didn’t matter anyway because she always made me feel special, asking me interesting questions, and then actually listening to the answers. I so fondly remember her as a major presence in my youth, coming to my plays, my graduation, my wedding, always smiling and so very alive. Like so much when we are young, I just assumed that was how the world simply “was” as your Mom and my Mom were really the only two adult women that I consistently interacted with year after year. They were both unique role models, gracious hostesses, products of their own eras, and powerful and capable individuals in the their own right while also running and raising two blood-bonded family units of six and eight. So many of the solid and important choices I have made over the last 40 years with my own family and with my life in the world, l can actually trace directly back to your own mother’s strength, her manner, and her love for all of you. We were all blessed to have her in our lives. Eileen and I were so sorry to hear of her passing. She was always welcoming to both of us and treated us so well when we were still regularly getting up to Long Island. It’s now been four decades since those incredible days growing up in the 1960s and 1970s New York but I still remember your Mom so well and so clearly. I can see her at the beach, at our homes, and (for some reason right now as I think about it) at a big family Sunday brunch we had in the Harp & Mandolin Restaurant in Little Neck in the early 1980s. I know you all will miss her presence in your lives. My thoughts are with you all. Please know that l am so thankful to have had her in my life. While the challenges of the times prevent me from attending the memorial service, I will, here in Virginia, celebrate her legacy and think of you all and remember all the good times we had when we were growing up together.
With all my love,
Your cousin, Frank
