Obituary of Catherine Luglio

Catherine Luglio, a resident of Brighton Gardens of Saddle River and former resident of Wyckoff and Pompton Lakes, NJ died on April 22, 2020 at age 85 after a long illness. Catherine was born in Hackensack Hospital to parents Louis and Mary. She grew up in Teaneck, but attended Emerson grammar school where her mother taught. She attended Teaneck and Miami Edison High Schools. After graduation, she attended secretarial school which started her off in the world of work and various office positions. She worked at State Farm Insurance Corporation’s Northeast Regional Office for 22 years when she retired at age 69. Her co-workers gave tribute to how pleasant she was to work with. Catherine had notable accomplishments in her youth in the area of music. She took piano lessons, primarily playing classical music. Her favorite composer was Chopin, mastering one of his more difficult pieces, Polonaise Militaire. She also had an extreme lifetime love of animals, especially cats and horses. She “adopted” her childhood cat “Smokey” from her piano teacher. As an adult she worked with Save the Animal Rescue Team (S.T.A.R.T.) to help find homes for stray cats, including providing a home for a gray tabby named Crystal. She was an avid horseback rider throughout her childhood and young adult years. She took horseback riding lessons at Springbrook Riding School in Montville, NJ with her daughters in the 1970’s. Catherine was a devoted wife to Vincent for 37 years until she was widowed in 1994. She was a loving mother to her daughters, actively involved in their activities, including serving many years as a Girl Scout leader. Catherine was an active grandmother, often babysitting and doing fun things with her grandchildren like attending their dancing and sports events, and coloring Easter eggs. In her retirement, she kept active socially, joining senior clubs like Parents without Partners and Theo. She also joined the Arthur Murray Dance Club and participated in a dance competition in Palm Beach, Florida. Catherine is survived by her daughters, Laura Scarpati and Elaine Peebles; grandchildren, Catherine, Alison and Elizabeth Peebles; son-in-laws, Douglas Peebles and Robert Scarpati; and cousins: Emma Skuby, Ramona Amorese, Allen Maragliano, Donna Ledger, Leo Maragliano and Joanne Van Steenbergen.
