I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Mr. Rung. He was a mentor to me when I first started working for Aetna Casualty in 2 World Trade Center way back in 1987. I enjoyed his sense of humor and friendly disposition, and I learned a lot from him. Through the years I still saw him occasionally when he visited New York, and was always happy to catch up with him. I will always remember the trip he took us on to Governors Island for a dinner with his regiment. Rest in peace, Sir.

John and I came to know each other during our years serving as lawyers with the Staff Counsel organization of The AEtna Casualty & Surety Co. We soon became good friends. I looked forward to meeting with him and other AEtna associates for annual Christmas repasts at Rolf's and the Heidelberg restaurants, and I marched with him on several occasions in the Steuben Day Parades in NYC. John was a true "Officer and Gentleman" who was true to his beloved Catholic Faith in every respect. He was an inspiration to all of us, and his memory shall remain vivid in both my mind and heart. Rest in peace, Colonel Rung.

I had the pleasure of working with John at Aetna's Law Offices for several years and then being his friend for many more. He was a pleasure to work with as well as a good and honorable man. I am so saddened by his untimely passing. My sincere condolences to his family and all. I am comforted knowing that he is now at peace in heaven - and sharing his opinions. Ed Hayes

My memories of the Colonel go back to when I was very young. He would visit our home for every Holiday and I always looked forward to seeing his newest gadget or watch. He had the most amazing watches and I would marvel at how he could tell me what time it was in Germany or Japan. He had a great sense of humor and would always joke with our mom and she would just respond Oh John!
I loved his stories about his time at Aetna handling injury cases. He would always exaggerate them and then let out his unmistakable laugh at the end.
Over the last four years our sister Kathy took amazing care of him and he was truly appreciative of how much she improved his life (although he did miss the $0.25 hot dogs he used to get in Queens on Sundays).
He was our dad's best friend, a patriot, an honorable man and a part of our family who will be missed. Rest In Peace Uncle John.

Uncle John was such a presence. Our commonality includes being Fordham Alumni and being part of the Gilligan family. Uncle John was always so complementary towards me. John left us with many tales of both his military and professional life. One of my favorite memories is giving unique gifts found in the commissary. We will never be caught unprepared in a storm with our crank flashlights and radio. May Uncle John rest in his eternal life. He will be missed.

Uncle John will truly be missed and leave a void in our family. We cherish the memories he leaves us with. No holiday or special occasion was ever complete without him. I can remember like yesterday his stories dating back to my early years. He particularly loved telling stories about his travel, the Army Reserves, and funny stories about court cases he had worked on. Aunt Catherine who loved travel would always love hearing those while she enjoyed a whiskey sour. It seems like yesterday he let me get behind the wheel of his car to drive around the dirt road by his house in Bennington VT when the whole family visited him there. I don’t think my feet could even reach the gas peddle! I can still hear my mother calling out when he was sneaking a cigar inside the house, a habit he gave up many years ago. He was a great influence in all of our lives and those memories will live on and never be forgotten.

Our hearts are so heavy with the passing of our Uncle John. He was my father in law’s best friend. And, my husband, Brian’s, Godfather. He was Brian’s favorite Uncle and we named our son, John, after him. Our extended Gilligan family spent every Christmas and numerous holiday celebrations together as a family with Uncle John. He was also our son, John’s Confirmation sponsor.
The last four years of his life, Uncle John was lovingly cared for by Brian’s sister, Kathy. She moved him into a wonderful, caring nursing care residence within walking distance to her home. She oversaw his every need and loved on him as a loving niece.
Rest In Peace, Uncle John, in God’s loving arms. You are forever in our hearts. We have such wonderful, loving memories of you and a life well lived.

Uncle John (as he was known to our family) lived a full life and received many blessings. It was my honor and love for him to be able to care for him the last years of his life. We had a special bond and I now have a guardian angel.
