Aunt Barb always knew how to make me feel at home and part of the family. In highschool, I'd join Jenny for family Christmases. I was always so happy to be there, to feel like I was part of the family and to take it all in. Never did I expect to be given a gift from Aunt Barb, yet every Christmas she'd have thought of me and gotten me one.
Then, at Jenny's wedding Aunt Barb took time out to talk to me, tell me how happy she was that I was there and that I was part of the family. Then she gave me the warmest big hug and continued to ask me about my wedding which was coming up in a week. She made me feel special and loved and I'm sure she was doing that for all of her patients before she got sick. That's what she was good at, making people feel like they are loved and special.
May her memory be a blessing for all who knew her.

My dearest condolences to the loved ones of Barbara as they go through this difficult time. May God give her family and friends strength and keep you close to His heart. As a new nurse, Barbara taught me how to go above and beyond for my patients, dot all my i’s, cross all my T’s and do it with a kind and pure heart. She pushed me every time to do better because she’s someone that can truly see someone’s potential and guide them to get there. What a complete blessing it was to work with her and get to know her. I remember counting down the days to her retirement with her. I know you will live forever in all of our hearts. Rest In Peace angel.

Barb was a fellow nurse, a friend, and someone to always look up to. Barb was one of the best nurses you could ever ask for. You knew when you were getting her patients that ever loose end was tied up, her patients were cleaned head to toe, and everything that had to be done was done. She was such a caring person. Me and barb would have hour conversations ever shift change as she finished up charting and I would sit next to her to look up my charts to get my day going. She would share stories about her grandchildren, children, husband, and her mom with me. She would bring in pictures of her grandkids every month to show me how big they were getting. Barb was a beautiful person and a one of a kind nurse. I will deeply miss her. I pray her family can find comfort in such a difficult time. May Barb rest in peace.

I consider myself blessed to have been a part of Barbra’s life since our time growing up in Mt. Fern. I think I first came to know her best when she drove Lynn and I back and forth to Marching Band practices and games. Lots of conversations filled the car as we traveled to and from the high school.
For a while after high school we kind of lost touch; each having jobs and kids and a very busy life, but we had recently connected for pizza gatherings in Lynn’s dining room with our high school group. It was amazing to see that despite too many years apart, the connection still remained amazingly strong. It was as if no time had passed as we sat around the table sharing our lives.
Barbara was still the same loving, compassionate person she had always been. She shared her stories about family and friends with us. We laughed a lot! She was especially proud to show off photos of her grandchildren. Each of the times we visited, we realized the depth of friendship we shared and was so lucky to have.
Good friends, like Barbara and the rest sitting around that table, are the major reason that life is so precious. I am so happy we had those visits, those hours to spend together. I will miss Barbara: her compassion, her love of life and her memorable laugh when we get together again.
With love,
Nancy Quam

Dear Birchenough family,
My most sincere condolences. I can not even imagine what you must be going through. Please know I keep you in my daily prayers so God can restore your hearts.
Barbara was an amazing friend and colleague. She was the most punctual person I ever met as she used to get to work at least 40 min before her shift started to get everything ready. I loved giving her a report of my patients because I knew I was leaving them in the best hands. Likewise, when she used to leave me her patients, I knew I would have a good day because Barbara left everything ready for me. I will never forget when I had to work one New Year's and I fell asleep! I got to work an hour and a half late all embarrassed in particular because I knew that the most punctual person was waiting for me. When I saw her, she was waiting for me with her usual smile and took the time to give me her report of patients. A true example of professionalism...
It was such a pleasure and my most honor to work with Barbara, my dearest friend...

When I think of Barbara, I always get a smile on my face because, in my recollections, she was always one who was quick to smile or laugh. As I recall, she sort of smiled when she played her clarinet in our high school band; I sat with a clear view of her smile from my own seat in the flute section of our band.
My thanks go to Barb for helping me to smile lots of times during the past 60 years or so of my life. Barb’s smiles and hearty laughter will stay with me always. Rest In Peace, Barbara. You shared your joy of life with all of us who knew you; thank you.

What Adam and Riley may hear and not understand is that their grandma died a hero. She was on the front lines treating the earliest patients with coronavirus in North Jersey. This was before the public, government, and hospitals knew what they were dealing with in COVID-19. She also was the recipient of experimental plasma therapy from a treated patient. Although the treatment failed, we can hold hope that medical professionals can study why it was unsuccessful and if there is an opportunity to save lives with this approach.
I am not creating an analogy between a soldier in war and COVID-19, but there is a sense of honor in having a loved one who died for a purpose and cause for the greater good. While this is likely of zero solace to Kristin, Bill, Andrew, Matt, and Kerri, hopefully one day it can provide a sense of pride.

I met Barbara in my first year working as a nurse at Clara Maass Medical Center in Jan of 2013. I worked the day shift on most of the same days at Barb who worked on nights. Through the many change of shift reports exchanged, Barb taught me so much about providing compassionate, safe, and smart care. She always put her patients first and would stay hours past her shift to make sure any loose ends were tied up and all of her charts were completed.
I loved how she answered the phone “2sa birchenough”....i thought it was so cute/cool that she used her last name
She brought pictures of her grandchildren to work all of the time and loved mimicking their cute voices and sharing their milestones.
When I left the unit and moved to the operating room Barb reached out to me for every major event, holiday, and often just to say hi through a sweet email from her ipad. “Hi Gracie, how are you?”...once she caught a glimpse of me in my new blue operating scrubs and emailed just to say I look good in blue.
She gave me a fleece blanket for Christmas years ago and it was my first ever “coworker Christmas gift” and I use it regularly even though its a Christmas print.
In her last days before her passing I spent time praying at Barbs side and watching as she fought her best for
her family.
I will miss her dearly and pray for her family to find peace. <3
Thank you Birchenough family for sharing Barb with all of us at Clara Maass.

The first time I met Barbara was when Craig ( kristin was a classmate) was sick almost 30 years ago and I reached out to her. Little did I know we would share grandsons down the road. Over the years we grew closer and closer. That being said I’m sure we all think we had a special relationship with Barbara. That’s because Barbara treated us all special.
Oh and those unexpected notes in the mailbox. Just last month she sent us a note wishing us to stay safe and healthy.
For me personally there will be a void not just because I lost a friend but my grandsons lost a wonderful grandma.
Bill, Kristin, Kerri, Andrew and Matt we are so very sorry you are suffering. Sadly, we have to live with our memories of Barbara. As we all know Barbara is in heaven. Now we all have another person in our prayers.

I remember just starting as a new nurse, barb taught me and others so much. "She would always say to me, "Damian you always answer me as if I'm your mother". You were my nursing mom, I will never forget you. I went in and saw her and told her how much she meant to me and all the new nurses she has taught and raised. That is my only solace. Barb would always talk about her kids, bill and especially her grandkids. Her love for them was breath taking. RIP, until we meet again, your son Damian.
