Obituary of Eileen Smyth

Beloved sister, aunt, wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother died Thursday, January 2, 2020, in the presence of her family after a short illness. Her life was defined by her Catholic faith and her devotion to her family. Born in Dunmanway, Cork, Ireland, she emigrated to New York where she met her loving husband Owen and together they raised four daughters in New Jersey. Her home was a place of love and welcome for all. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Ann (Robert), Eileen (Richard), Laura (Paul), and Colleen (Jeffrey); her grandchildren Brennan, Kelsey, Abigail, Hugh, Owen, and Lawrence; her sister Catherine Lord of New York and her brother Denis O’Donovan of Dunmanway, Cork; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, and her brothers Michael and Patrick. Family and friends will gather for a visitation on Monday, January 6th from 6 pm to 9 pm at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, January 7th at 9:45AM at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 700 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ with interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ. As a very practical woman, she had a strong dislike for funeral flowers. For those who wish to honor her life-long commitments to faith and service, the family welcomes donations to Eva's Village (https://evasvillage.networkforgood.com/projects/12436-general-donation-page) or to “St. Elizabeth’s Charitable Fund” at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 700 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481.
