Kathleen Gomez

Obituary of Kathleen Hoyt Gomez

Kathleen Hoyt Gomez peacefully passed to eternal life on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Kathleen was born in Columbia, South Carolina on August 8, 1921. Throughout her life she always remained a gracious and kind Southern lady. Her first husband, Harry Woodhurst, died in World War II on a destroyer in the Pacific, leaving Kathleen a widow at the age of 22. Several years later, Kathleen left her family’s farm life to pursue her love of fashion at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Immensely talented, she received the Parson-Jo Copland Award for dress design the year she graduated. In 1952 she married Juan Gomez in NYC and later became the devoted, steadfast mother of Christian and Moira. She was a loving “Mame” to all her grandchildren, Lara, Carmen, John, Maggie and Georgia, and her great grandchildren, Tommy, William and Charlie. Above all else, Kathleen was a faith-filled Christian who lived out her beliefs every day. She treated everyone with respect, interest and gentleness. She was the most ardent supporter of EdPowerment, Inc., her daughter Moira’s foundation for vulnerable youth in Tanzania. Kathleen will be returned to South Carolina for her final resting place.  Arrangements will be handled by Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia, S.C.  Donations in her memory can be made to EdPowerment, Inc., P.O. Box 641, Saddle River, NJ 07458.
