I am so saddened to hear about James' passing. For 15 years he took care of my grandparents, Art and Jane Fowler. In that time he went from being a care taker, to a friend and finally a member of our family. James and I often discussed the special connection that we had and we vowed to remain in touch after my grandparents passed on. My family and I had dinner with him last week and I was so excited to see him. My deepest condolences to his family. He was a remarkable, kind hearted, funny, strong, amazing man. I loved him dearly. God Bless.

To the McGrath Family, I met James years ago when he took care of my aunt, Joan VanTieghem as she battled breast cancer. James was an angel! He was compassionate, caring and such a positive soul. He made us all laugh even at the very toughest of times. When James was around we knew there was nothing to worry about, Joan was getting the best care possible. After my aunt passed away James was there as a friend to support my Uncle Dick through his terrible loss. Then he was there at the hospital to support my mom when Dick unexpected died of a heart attack. James was such a giving person. He had a very big heart. He has a special place in heaven and I am sure he has the angels laughing. I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Ginger Masters

Dear McGrath Family and one and all: Anyone who knew James knew someone who was so special, no one ever forgot him. We were all enriched by his presence in our lives. I cannot fathom how to go on without him being a part of my life. I will always cherish our times together on the road, at Ramapo and afterward. We have lost a great one.

James was the pre-eminent Chef at Ramapo College when I was a student there, who raised the level of the food service from inedible to unforgettable. James was always a delightful guy, serious, wry, smart and self-deprecating when warranted. He shall be missed, as a friend, and patron of the Arts. He was also a ham, and a very funny friend through these many years after Ramapo and beyond.

James fed our spirits as well as our tummies at the Capitol Theatre by sharing his unique perspective and joy so profusely with all of us. He made us think; he made us laugh; he made us happy.
